Short answer: it depends on whose jet ski it is. Rent from our fleet in Mallorca and you need no licence at all - a safety briefing is included and you're riding within minutes. Own and skipper your own watercraft in Spain and you'll need a Spanish nautical qualification. The exact requirements depend on the craft and where you ride, and this guide gives you the honest shape of it.

Renting: no licence, no paperwork, just the briefing

Spain allows licence-free riding on rental watercraft operated under a rental company's arrangements, and that's exactly how our jet ski rentals at Portals Nous and Port Adriano work. You get a full safety briefing - controls, the riding area, what to do if you fall off - and then the water is yours. No course, no certificate, no waiting.

Do You Need a Licence to Drive a Jet Ski in Spain?

This is why renting is the right answer for the vast majority of holiday visitors. If you're on Mallorca for a week or two and want the jet ski experience, there is genuinely nothing standing between you and the sea. Want the best of the coastline with zero navigation decisions? Our guided tours run from both Portals Nous and Port Adriano.

Owning: a Spanish qualification is required

The moment the watercraft is yours - bought, borrowed or bareboat - Spanish regulations require the person driving it to hold a recognised nautical qualification. Spain has several levels of qualification, and which one you need depends on the craft you're skippering and where you intend to ride it.

We deliberately won't list specific licence classes, ages, costs or course lengths here, because the details vary with the craft, the rider and the regulations in force - and getting this from a summary on the internet is how people end up with the wrong course. What we can tell you from years of handing over new Sea-Doos:

  • It's very achievable. Courses run regularly on Mallorca, and plenty of our customers have gone from zero to qualified within their first season of ownership.
  • The right course depends on the machine. What you need for a Spark differs in practice from what makes sense if you're planning long coastal runs on a GTX.
  • Enforcement is real. Maritime authorities do check papers on the water in the Balearics. Ride your own machine unqualified and the fine - and the end to your day - is genuinely not worth it.

Ask us and we'll point you to course providers. When you buy a machine from us, part of the handover conversation is making sure you know exactly which qualification you need and where to get it locally. It's a normal part of the buying process, not an obstacle.

Visitors with foreign licences

If you already hold a nautical qualification from another country, whether it's valid for skippering in Spanish waters depends on the qualification and the circumstances. Bring the paperwork and ask - we'll tell you what we know and point you to the right official source rather than guess on your behalf.

The practical decision tree

  • Holiday visitor, want to ride this week? Rent - no licence needed, briefing included.
  • Thinking about buying? Plan the qualification alongside the purchase. We'll connect you with local course providers, and you can weigh the whole picture with our renting vs buying guide.
  • Already own, unsure your papers cover your riding area? Contact us - if we don't know, we'll know who does.

The rules exist because the Balearic coast is busy water, shared with swimmers, sailors and ferries. A qualified skipper - or a well-briefed renter inside a managed area - is what keeps it fun for everyone.
